Studies show that with populations who have faced defeat and loss, the arts and creative expression can have a significant impact in facilitating life change. Even among audiences the Minstrels have touched, results have been positive.

The number of Boston’s homeless has increased by 41% in the past decade. There are 6,210 homeless people in the City of Boston in 2002 compared to 4,411 in 1992. There are 1,367 homeless children in Boston in 2002 compared to 800 in 1992, an increase of 71%. Demographics of Boston’s homeless* follow:

  • In 1999, a total of 5,280 men, women, and children lived in shelters.
  • by 2002 the total was 6,210, an increase of 18% in three years.
  • Adult men number roughly 3,271 in 2002.
  • Homeless women number 1,572, a 59% increase since 1992.
  • The average age of a single shelter guest is between 40 – 45 years old.
  • Depending on the shelter, the ethnic breakdown is:
    • 37% to 60% African American
    • 25% to 49% Caucasian
    • 10% to 16% Hispanic
    • 5%to 18% Other
